Tacoma Opera - Die Walkure

Tacoma Opera - Die Walkure at Pantages Theater

Why see Tacoma Opera - Die Walkure?

The Valkyrie

Wagner's epic Ring Cycle's second instalment, Die Walkure ("The Valkyrie") plays out in a thrilling performance by Tacoma Opera! A 39-piece orchestra backs a cast of breathtaking singers presenting the monumental work, loosely based on Norse mythology with a healthy dose of European folklore. Discover a world of Gods, men, and monsters, romance, revenge, adventure, and more. The continuation of Tacoma's journey through the full cycle, this is an all-time classic of opera with enduring music that has transcended into broader culture, including Wagner's famous "Ride of the Valkyries".

What is the Story?

Based on the ancient Volsunga Saga and Poetic Edda from Norse Mythology, Siegmund, the half-mortal son of Wotan, ruler of the Gods, finds himself battling his nemesis Hunding, after falling for Hunding's wife Sieglinde, who is, unbeknown to either of them, his twin sister. While the fight continues on earth, the Gods look down. Wotan beseeches Brunnhilde, his Valkyrie daughter, and reaper of heroes, to protect his son. But Wotan's wife, Fricka, the protector of Wedlock, is angered by the adultery and incest he has committed and bids Brunnhilde to make sure he dies. Torn between compassion and duty, Brunnhilde awaits a terrible fate...
